Capitalizing on his success, Delbard expanded. He began cultivating fruit trees on his family’s farm in Malicorne, France, and in 1947, he published Les Beaux Fruits de France. This groundbreaking literary work positioned him as a respected global leader in horticulture, allowing him to build France’s largest conservatory orchard—and, in turn, lay the foundation for a thriving rose nursery.
History
Georges Delbard Nurseries and Rose Gardens was founded by Georges Delbard in 1935. An avid lover of nature, Delbard began making a name for himself after opening his first store in Paris selling flowers and seedlings. The same year, he revolutionized the floral industry with his mail-order catalogs, cementing his nursery as a respected innovator in the gardening world.
From Orchards to Innovation
Over the coming decades, the orchard and nursery thrived. Encouraged by his continued success, Delbard propelled the industry forward yet again when he opened the first self-service horticultural store in 1958—which would later become the prototype for the modern garden center. Later that same year, the company also debuted its first research laboratory and began breeding over 250 striking new rose varieties that it would become known for.
Today, Georges Delbard Nurseries and Rose Gardens proudly remains family-run. Backed by nearly a century of horticultural excellence, the company’s rich history, innovative spirit, and beautiful blooms continue to inspire gardeners everywhere.
