No worries — life gets busy! If you've received your bare root roses but need to wait a little while before planting:
If it's less than 3 weeks, you can leave them in their box (sealed up nice and snug in the bag they came in) and pop them somewhere cool and frost-free, like a shed or garage. You might see some new growth — especially with spring deliveries — which is totally normal and actually a great sign!
If it'll be more than 3 weeks, we recommend “heeling in” your roses. It’s easy — just remove them from the box and bag (keep them bundled together), dig a shallow trench in your garden, tuck the roots in, and gently cover them with soil. Give them a drink of water if things are dry. This will keep them happy until you’re ready to plant properly.
If you’ve ordered potted roses, they’re a bit more flexible! Just keep them in their pots somewhere outdoors with good light and make sure the soil stays moist — not too dry, not soggy. They’ll be perfectly content for a few weeks until you’re ready to get them in the ground.
First, choose the right pot. Select a pot at least 15 gallons with a diameter of at least 18-24 inches and drainage holes at the bottom to prevent waterlogging.
Next, prepare the rose. If your rose is bare-root, soak the roots in water for at least 24 hours before planting. If your rose is potted, water it thoroughly.
You can then plant the rose. Fill the pot with high-quality potting mix, leaving enough space to accommodate the roots without bending them. Position the rose in the center of the pot, ensuring that the graft union (the swollen part where the stems join the roots) is just above the soil level. Backfill with potting mix, gently firming down to eliminate air pockets.
After planting, water the rose well and place the pot in a location where the rose will get at least 6 hours of sun a day.
Roses like their soil to stay evenly moist but not soggy. In warmer months, this might mean watering every day or every other day. Just check the top inch of soil — if it feels dry, it’s time for a drink.
We recommend that rose bushes be planted at least 18 inches apart.
